              Warning: Sometimes on the battlefield
you will still find relics of explosives.
All these shells, hand grenades, and
mortar rounds can even nowadays still
              be very dangerous.
Some of the artillery bombs may contain
poison gas, which can cause severe
              blistering or worse injuries.
In France it is by law forbidden to
              remove relics from the battlefield.
So, it is for your own safety:
take a picture of the steel harvest,
              but leave these relics untouched!

My sources of information are largely based in books, well informed websites, and private persons with a lot of knowledge about the époque and the locations.
I am grateful for the knowledge they offered me and thereby I like to make acknowledgements and a tribute to the most important sources.

Before I spend some personal words of gratitude in the second halve of this page, I present you my list of highly recommendable books, my main sources of information. This list is of course concise, so not complete.

Of course I am grateful for the inspiration these authors gave me.
For maps I always use a Michelin Atlas of France and Southern Flanders, scale 1:200.000. In France I also make use of the hikers maps of the French "Institute Geographique National", 1:25.000. Besides I use in Flandres various topographic maps, scale 1: 20.000, of the Belgian National Geographic Institute.
The most recommendable battlefield maps of Major & Mrs. Holt, I use, are clear informative sketches, but you will always need an extra topographically correct roadmap. I do study facsimile-copies of original trench maps of the time to point out the exact locations. I also use Google Earth and Géoportail.fr to plan my trips and to give you an impression of the battlefield concerned.

In the left column of this website you will find a long list with interesting websites. Some of these websites are managed by my worldwide internet friends. They are specialists, each on their own terrain of knowledge. Others are managed by a team of people interested with one or more of the many angles of the Great War. These websites form also a great source of knowledge for me. Click HERE for these interesting WW1-links.

              Personal words of gratitude.

And last but not least: via the internet and my travels I met a lot of private persons with a lot of knowledge and who sometimes were willing to welcome us in their homes and tell us a lot of information about these locations. I will mention a few but alas not all!

For Germany: Gratefully I have to mention Herr G.F. Dose for letting me use some pictures of the unique collection of period photographs made and kept by his father, Oberleutnant Dose of the Prussian 187th Infantry Regiment, who served at the Lingekopf or Collet du Linge in October 1915. Alas Herr Dose, who was an always loyal pen friend, died recently on 12-09-2008.
I also want thank the well informed researcher and author, Hans Peter Tombi, and the "Verlag Les Amis du Hartmannsweilerkopf Deutschland" for allowing me to use some trench maps and period pictures of the Hartmannswillerkopf.

For Belgium: I have to thank Mrs. Butaye and Stijn Butaye of the Pondfarm, St. Juliaan, Belgium, for their warm welcome with self baked applecake.

For France: I am grateful for the welcome of, ....

I also thank Mr. & Mrs. Colligan, guardians of the Ulster Tower in Thiepval, for their always warm welcome.

For Canada: I have to thank my friends Mr. Mark Giroux and Mr. Cliff Nyenhuis for making me a Dutch and proud member of the Central Ontario Branch of the WFA.

For the USA: Also my gratitude to George Wylie of Commission Rifle, and Joseph P. Robinson of Col J.'s Pickelhauben.net and co-author of the "Handbook of Imperial Germany", who both often answered patiently my questions about the German Army. My friend George, with whom I spend an interesting Sunday in Maastricht, the Netherlands,  let me use some pictures of his private collection of German period photographs.
I also like to express my warm appreciation for my fellow front traveller, the author, Robert Mueller & Mrs. Nancy Mueller of "French Battlefields", for their nice company with us in Amsterdam and their wise advice.

For the Netherlands: I want to thank my fellow members of The Western Front Association Nederland, who learn me a lot, and especially Aris de Bruijn of www.grensland1418.nl for sharing his overwhelming information about the Northern Vosges, and Jan Carel Broek Roelofs for sharing his detailed knowledge about the events in Verdun.
I would also like to mention here my Dutch friend, René Kappert, with whom I interchanged a lot of practical info about the Vosges. René made some of his photos available on the Alsace-Sundgau Photo Impression, and designed for this page some of the maps.
I also hereby show my gratitude to my always-helpful friends of the World at War Forum, Ben van der Heijden and Hans Molier.
