              Warning: Sometimes on the battlefield
you will still find relics of explosives.
All these shells, hand grenades, and
mortar rounds can even nowadays still
              be very dangerous.
Some of the artillery bombs may contain
poison gas, which can cause severe
              blistering or worse injuries.
In France it is by law forbidden to
              remove relics from the battlefield.
So, it is for your own safety:
take a picture of the steel harvest,
              but leave these relics untouched!

              year of visit: 2005

A visit in 4 parts to the front along
the banks of the Yzer river.          >>>

We start at the most western point
of the front, the Belgian lines, Nieuport, then
              southward via Ramskapelle,
              to Pervijze, Tervate, Stuijvekenskerke,
and to the Trench of Death
in Dixmuide, next to the former German lines
via Leke and Vladslo to finish in Houthulst
              .
              <<<
The former lines of  the Belgian Army
west and south of the Yzer river,
the most western point of the front,
              the sluices complex of
              "Goose Claw",  Ganzenpoot,
              at Nieuport,
              and beyond southward,
on the left bank of the Yzer river,
              to Ramskapelle.
              Nieuport, Nieuwpoort, Ganzenpoot,
the Monument to commemorate King Albert 1,

Chief of Staff of the Belgian Army,

At Ganzenpoot, the most western point of the front,

the monument for the 566 British soldiers without a grave,

who died in the Battle of the Yzer, late October 1914.

From this location, a sluices complex with 5 "arms" or "toes" , called Ganzenpoot, "Goose Claw ", ...

... Belgian engineers caused in 1916 an inundation, ...

... a controlled flooding by opening the doors of the sluices,...

...letting in the water from the sea

on time of  high tide into the lower polders,...

...and demolishing parts of the dykes.
Every day, again and again opening the locks,
              under heavy shelling and fire.

              These inundations were very important
in defending the Belgian sector against
the incessant German attacks along the Yzer river.

              Ramskapelle

              South of Nieuport, at Ramskapelle;
              a demarcation stone to commemorate
the most advanced point of the Germans,...

... during the Battle of the Yzer,
close to this former Ramskapelle railroad station,...

... with this simple and modest memorial:
"ON THIS LOCATION THE 14th (Belgian) LINE REGIMENT
              BATTLED HEROICALLY IN OCTOBER 1914
              FOR THE RECONQUEST OF RAMSKAPELLE"

The former station is fortified on the inside
with concrete walls to serve as a camouflaged bunker.

On the northern side of the village of Ramskapelle,
              along the same former railroad...

... we visit the Belgian Military Cemetery of Ramskapelle.

Thousands of Belgian men are buried here,
killed during the Battle of the Yzer.

We go southward to the Observation Tower in Pervijze....

Pierre, I contacted you some time ago about my Belgian great, great Uncle Guillaume Batselier (1st Jagers te Voet)who was killed between October 21st and 31st 1914 probably around Pervijse at the Farm Berkelhof and who lies as an unknown soldier. I have been invtied to lay a wreath at Alveringem on November 11th this year, but I would also like to lay a wreath for Guillaume and leave a plaque with his picture on it at Ramskappelle. Do you know if there are any ceremonies at Ramskappelle between November 9 - 11th that I could go to? Or will it be alright to simply go to Ramskappelle and leave a wreath on a grave on the Monday, 10th November?
              Many thanks
              Anita

@ Anita. Of course I remember your message, Anita! I will have to ask some Belgian friends for this information. I don't think the Belgians will object in any way, and that youare allowed to honour your Belgian Great great Uncleleaving a wreath at Ramskapelle.
I try to get some more specific info for you, Anita.

@ Anita. The 11th of the 11th is a national memorial day in Belgium with remembrance ceremonies in almost every village along the front, and in this sector, amongstothers in: Diksmuide, Houthulst, Ieper, Nieuwpoort, and Veurne.
I also leave a link to an English page of "WW1 Remembrance Commemorations in Belgium", click, please, HERE.

I am still awaiting news about Ramskapelle in particular,Anita.

Pierre, I had not found your pictures of Ramskappelle Cemetary till today. They are amazing. My Mother is unable to make the trip to Belgium for this special November 11th, but at least I will be able to show her your photographs. Do you have any idea where the Farm Berkelhof near Pervijze is? i don't think I have asked you before.

@ Anita. Thank you for your compliments about the pictures, Anita.
Most farms had been rebuild after the war on the exact location as before and many times those farms kept their original (Belgian) name.
There is outside the village of Pervijze a "Berkelhofweg" or Berkelhof road, named after the farm. Perhaps it is worthwile for you to make a short trip along this Berkelhofweg, 8600 Pervijze - Diksmuide, and ask some locals there for "boerderij (farm) de Berkelhof".
I do hope that my incomplete information still might be helpful, Anita.
