Beste Nederlandstalige Gasten,
Geïnspireerd door een tekening van mijn favoriete karikaturist, de Elzasser “Revanchard”, Jean-Jaques “Hansi” Waltz heb ik nog eens en ander uitgezocht over die “Zabern Affäre”. Hansi’s tekening refereert aan een reeks van volksoploopjes rond deze "Oberleutnant" von Forstner, die zich eind 1913 afspeelde in het Elzasser stadje, Saverne, dat in die tijd 9.000 inwoners telt. Dit volksoploopje en andere opstootjes rond de “Oberleutnant” zouden leiden tot veel ophef in de andere delen van het Keizerrijk Duitsland, tot aan de Kaiser toe. Het verhaal over de opstootjes vertelt ons veel over de spanningen, negen maanden voor het uitbreken van de Grote Oorlog, tussen de Franse Elzassers aan de ene kant en aan de andere kant hun starre bezetters, zoals de Franse bevolking in die tijd de Duitse autoriteiten ervoer. Het verhaal vertelt ons ook over de juridische onaantastbaarheid van het Duitse Keizerlijke Leger.

First Warning: Sometimes on the battlefield you will still find relics of explosives. All these shells, hand grenades, and mortar rounds can even nowadays still be very dangerous. Some of the artillery bombs may contain poison gass, which can cause severe blistering or worse injuries. In France it is by law forbidden to remove relics from the battlefield. So, it is for your own safety: take a picture of the steel harvest, but leave these relics untouched!
Second Warning: Do not enter fortresses, bunkers, or tunnel systems without proper guidance or thorough preparation. This can be very dangerous. In many strongholds the walls and ceilings are unstable, and there might be shafts, until 40m. deep. Only recently, on 12 July 2009, a 25-year old, Swiss tourist was not cautious enough, and fell down one of these shafts of Fort de Souville near a Pamart bunker for about 20 m.! It took a special rescue team almost 3 hours to rescue this still lucky tourist!
