Dear Guests,
Last week I Introduced a new category of English articles, Pierre's Book Reviews.
This first editorial, “Two American 2009 Books: Guide and Imperial Germany”, tells about my reading experiences of two books, Robert Mueller: “Fields of War - Fifty Key Battlefields in France and Belgium”, and Janet Robinson (Ret. Col.) and Joe Robinson (Ret. Col.): “Handbook of Imperial Germany”. Of course I do hope, that you will also appreciate these book reviews.
I released a completely new photo page about the Alsace Sundgau region in France; Zillisheim, Illfurth, Largitzen, and Pfetterhouse.
We pay a visit to the German 380 mm. artillery base at Zillisheim, to the Illfurth Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof, the Bismarck bunker near Largitzen, and the Villa Agathe bunker near Pfetterhouse, the southern end of the Western Front. On this new page you will find 125 images; maps, sketches, period pictures, and of course mainly our own photo’s. As always I translated for you the inscriptions on the memorials. |

First Warning: Sometimes on the battlefield you will still find relics of explosives. All these shells, hand grenades, and mortar rounds can even nowadays still be very dangerous. Some of the artillery bombs may contain poison gass, which can cause severe blistering or worse injuries. In France it is by law forbidden to remove relics from the battlefield. So, it is for your own safety: take a picture of the steel harvest, but leave these relics untouched!
Second Warning: Do not enter fortresses, bunkers, or tunnel systems without proper guidance or thorough preparation. This can be very dangerous. In many strongholds the walls and ceilings are unstable, and there might be shafts, until 40m. deep. Only recently, on 12 July 2009, a 25-year old, Swiss tourist was not cautious enough, and fell down one of these shafts of Fort de Souville near a Pamart bunker for about 20 m.! It took a special rescue team almost 3 hours to rescue this still lucky tourist!
